| Sauna has played an important role in the life of Estonians, especially country people, since ancient times. Sauna has been spoken about in many Estonian folktales, proverbs and in Estonian national epos “Kalevipoeg”. In addition to being a sacred grove the sauna was a very sacred place. Sauna wasn't just a place to wash, it helped to relax muscles, which were tired from the hard work, and to heal illnesses. So, it was as a medical establishment. Mostly, a man was born in sauna and died there, too. Today, under the development of science and technology and in spite of the rapid way of life, sauna hasn't lost its importance, the other way round – it's making friends with new and new people. The essence and functions of sauna have just changed a little. The steam bath sauna has spread almost all over the world and in many places the steam bath sauna is known exactly as Finnish sauna or Finnish sauna. Sauna was especially well popularised during the Olympic Games in Berlin in 1936 as the sample sauna from Finland. The influence of sauna on the organism is very complicated. Sauna is studied by scientists from many states and the science of sauna is gradually developing. Hereby we'll introduce the sayings about sauna from folktales and proverbs. A great amount of them has been penetrated in our everyday life and we don't discern the difference between the proverbs and beliefs of real life. Sauna is a doctor of the poor ones. Sauna was considered to be a sacred place in the olden times. Nothing bad was done in sauna as it was thought that the man doing something bad will fall ill. Sauna was a sacred place – the children were born there and the sick ones were brought there to cure. The warm of a sauna is more than being gorged. Sauna steam is better than warm white bread. Sauna steam and water shouldn't be forbidden to anybody as there wouldn't be a lack of them. There's no place in the world where so many good ideas and feelings could arise as in sauna. A day to sleep and going to sauna are brothers. 'It's better not to eat in the evening than to miss sauna. There’s nothing as good as sauna. All the saunas of the ancient times were sauna without a chimney – the smoke came in from the direction of the pile of stones on top of sauna stove. A sauna of the kind made people healthy and strong. A towel or a sheet used in sauna should be taken with you into the steam room of sauna. Also, an additional sheet used in sauna should be taken with you in order to try yourself between the steam enjoying and after sauna. Certainly, soap or a shampoo is a compulsory equipment of sauna. One should be washed before entering the steam room. AN obligatory part of sauna is a bunch of small leafy switches for beating the skin during a Finnish sauna. The most common is the birch one, which has got a very pleasant smell. Have a good beating! |
